Reference Collection Development Proposal

MLS Outcome: P.O. 2
MLS Values: P.V. 1, 2, 3

The purpose of the LI813 Course is to introduce future librarians to reference sources, effective selection of information retrieval tools and resources, to develop search strategies, and to evaluate search results. The content and learning activities in the course were influenced by the Katz’s theory of evaluation criteria of reference services, and Mellon’s theory of library anxiety, where patrons’ emotions come in to play as they do research.

My proposal cites five sources, carefully selected as potential additions to the collection in a high school guidance counseling center. This project practiced evaluating individual reference sources, building a collection of reference works, and thinking about reference sources in terms of the ultimate users of the collection. This demonstrates that I can implement the evaluation, development, maintenance, and management of collections and resources to meet specific information needs of a community.
