MLS Outcome: P.O. 7
MLS Value: P.V. 4

The purpose of the LI860 Scotland course is to allow library students to explore current issues in the dynamics of global interactions of information technology, government policies, structure of knowledge, and the international marketplace. The trip focused on libraries, archives, and special collections in Scotland. I approached the experiences I had while traveling with Dewey’s constructivist view, thinking about my own interactions with the individuals we met and shaping my own understanding of another part of the world, and in my case, what I could learn about library science from this experience.

The reflective journal and accompanying blog give an account of my experiences while visiting academic, government, public, and special libraries in Scotland. Through this experience, I practiced expressing my analysis of the status of librarianship across cultures, comparing and contrasting the provision of library and information services in Scotland with that in the United States. This demonstrates my ability to discuss opportunities for growth and current challenges for libraries, archives, special collections, and information agencies in another country. As an outcome of this assignment, I was immersed in professional development and committed to lifelong learning, sharing what I learned in Scotland with my colleagues.
